Nearly 80 people gathered on 16 November 2017 to discuss Education in Emergencies. The conference was organised by RECI with the support of the SDC and Swiss Solidarity.
The discussions led to a number of conclusions: education in crisis situations requires a high degree of flexibility, but must also meet general quality standards; these include, for example, the participation of all those concerned or a comprehensive approach that also includes life skills and social aspects. Education cannot be assigned to either development or humanitarian aid; these distinctions should be abandoned and education should include both sectors in a targeted manner. Finally, there are valuable synergies to be exploited between programmes in fragile countries and crisis regions and the experience gained in Switzerland, particularly in the education and training of young asylum seekers.
